To "ad"d or subtract

Watching a movie on TV is real torture considering that you spent at least an extra hour on the advertisements. Who has that kind of time? With my daughter and my husband’s crazy schedule, it is so difficult to catch up. The other day, I practically had to pull up my eyes with toothpicks while I struggled to watch a movie, way into the night. Halfway through, I wondered whether I was enjoying myself or torturing myself. :D Practically every five minutes into the movie is interrupted with scores of ads.

On the topic of ads, I sometimes pause to think: Do these advertisers/ product companies really think it makes a difference? I cannot imagine one product that I have bought because I was a influenced by an ad. Yes, when a new product/service hits the market, it makes total sense to me. But on a daily basis, I consider them a sheer waste of time and money. For instance, I cannot imagine buying a certain brand of cement because a certain actress (looking constipated, really ) is promoting it. What is the chance of that happening? They should probably focus on some good sturdy building that they have built with it. Imagine this scenario:

Man at cement shop: I have come to buy good cement. What do you suggest?
Shopkeeper: This is blah blah cement. All builders prefer this.
Man: Staring at an ad… I will buy that cement instead.
Shopkeeper: But it is a new product.
Man: My favorite actress is promoting it. It must be good!

I do buy creams. To keep my skin moisturized. Period. I cannot imagine that it will make me fair. And what is the point in having a fair face and not-so-fair body. What about the rest of the body????? I am assuming that after applying the cream on the face, the skin on the hands will look towards the face and just imitate it. There are ads that show cream being applied on the face and voila! after 3 weeks, your entire body is fair. Amazing.

Have any of you seen that ad on a pickle in which the guy has an abnormally long index finger because of licking pickle all the time. It is a positive turn off to me. Makes my skin crawl. I am quite sure that I will never buy that pickle. In this case, I am sure that the competitor has designed the ad!

And those stupid ads on detergent. Will they ever stop? Fresh mango pulp, then iron it and still the stain vanishes just by dipping in the detergent… too much. I struggle with fresh juice stains. After several washes and the colour of the cloth actually fades, does it really go.

Of course, there are ads that are superb in content, like the ‘Jaago re’ ads. Very thought provoking too. Ads that show that the company cares enough to make an ad that will tip the scales in their favor. The print ads are somehow more appealing and drive home the point better. I think they should designate a time slot on TV just for ads. Because most people don’t watch when they play it between movies anyway.

Can you think of any ads that have bugged you to no end or the really hilarious ones…..?

Very true, bins. I too hate these ads between movies. I prefer to watch them on a dvd, instead.
And, yeah, I very much hate the following stupid ads :
- All the sanitary napkin ads that show a blue liquid being poured on to it. On the same topic, comes the whistle ad - whenever u turn, the whistle goes on so that the stain doesn't happen. Absurd.
- The Panties for men ad in which a chimpanzee wears it and blah blah blah. Horrible.
- And not to forget, all the Bingo ads - absolutely silly and done without any sense.
Actually the list can go on.
But the ones that are good enough are
- The ads that show not to scribble on our national monuments, treat our foreign tourist properly etc.
- All Incredible India ads.
- Almost all Airtel Ads
- The unforgettable Hutch pug
There should be a separate channel for ads, the way it is going.

LOL......:-D!!!!!!!

Yes the Jaagore ads are superb.

Once when I was going thru blogs I came across this post abt ads & abt how there is a commission which looks into complaints made by common people abt ads which makes 'out of the world' promises & inturn withdraws them if the complaints r proved right.

I like the Tata Sky ads with Aaamir Khan & Gul
And tht Limca ad with a couple & water keeps gushing out at every corner[the song is good]
When i remember more I'll be back:-).

Bins, I miss Indian advts. I really do. The advts. here are big BORES. I usually keep movies/shows on DVR and watch it when I get time. This way I get to skip all of those horrible advts. though I wish I could see some Indian ones.

Even the Indian channels here show local boring advts. which I frwd.

Well, sometimes, the 'ad'd adds to our head aches.. Mostly the ads acts like interrupts breaking the flow of the serial/movie which one will be watching.

I read somewhere that the advertizers depend on the sub conscious effect of the ads in the minds of the consumers. No matter, how fed up we are,the repeated telecasting of the ads does produce a effect which they try to make use of. As you said, some ads are indeed though provoking and spread a social message. The remaining ones, are pure professionally Business kinds.

I appreciate your thoughts on the buying of the skin creams. To be fair, the ads try to bring a inferiority comples in you and then tru to provide a solution. Only the ones who can see through the trick survive, the others go with the Pied Piper. ;)

Nice point being discussed.

Bins: My favourite ads Lalithaji - though I never thought Surf makes anything so white it remained on my mind all the time even now!

Another one - there was a blue bar soap - I forget which one.

Goldspot the Zing thing!

Coke ad where Aishwarya Rai was introduced.

ok ok ok.. I know these are all so old but as Solilio said - Indian ads are so amazing! There is so much of zing and normal life in them.

One ad I really hate - or rather I grew to hate - Indian tourism ad that comes on BBC. I think it is a very good one - but it comes every 15 minutes. Now if I hear it I scream!

actually, research has proved that ads do make a difference in consumer psyche. repeat advertising makes us remember the brands. i know for one that i only know of so many insurance agents in US and all of 'em i know from ads. oh they definitely have an impact!! consciously or subconsciously.

Agree with roop here. Just say I go to the supermarket & if I had to choose between 2 unknown[meaning unused by me] products...I'll definitely go for the 1 for which I've seen an advertisment.
